Antonia Fokken, MA, LMFT
Antonia is a Certified EMDR Psychotherapist for Alta Mira. She has been a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist since 2001 and has a passion for using EMDR specifically for helping to support and rewire the addicted brain, using specific EMDR protocols to process trauma, help curb cravings, and to help build the stability and resources needed for recovery.
Antonia has been a therapist for 25 years and began her first job out of graduate school as a Substance Abuse Counselor for incarcerated teens. She went on to be promoted to a Lead Substance Abuse Counselor in an outpatient chemical dependency treatment center and at the same time was the Lead Drug Court Assessment and Treatment Coordinator. Since then, she has gained experience working as a psychotherapist in private practice, group homes, juvenile halls, crisis response programs, a mobile crisis team, and chemical dependency treatment programs. Antonia was the Assessment Center Coordinator for MPI at Alta Bates/Summit Hospital, a hospital-based chemical dependency treatment program.
Antonia has a BA in Psychology with an emphasis in Eastern Perspectives on Holistic Health at SFSU. In 1998, she graduated with an MA in Art Therapy and Marriage and Family therapy from the College of Notre Dame. With her passion and interest in how we hold emotions and experiences in the body, she became a certified yoga teacher in 2005, and a yoga therapist in 2008.
Other formal studies include: training in Motivational Interviewing, Bioenergetics, Restorative Teacher Training with Judith Lasater, Integrative Restoration (I-Rest) Training with Richard Miller, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (body and mindfulness oriented therapy) training in the treatment of Trauma, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT,) Mindfulness Based-Stress Reduction (MBSR), Prolonged Exposure (PE) for the treatment of trauma, Non-Violent Communication (NVC), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Self-Compassion Practices.
Academically, Antonia has been on the faculty of Sofia University (formerly the Institute for Transpersonal Psychology), and the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS). She has also been a Clinical Supervisor of interns and trainees going through the licensure process.
