Percocet Addiction Rehab Center
Percocet addiction is a very serious opioid use disorder. Percocet is a prescription narcotic painkiller that is highly susceptible to abuse and addiction. Signs of dependence on this drug include being unable to control its use and developing tolerance and withdrawal. Percocet addiction can be effectively treated and managed, but it is important to first be diagnosed and to go through supervised detox. Effective treatment after detox includes medications, therapy, and residential care.
What Is Percocet Addiction?
Percocet is a brand name narcotic pain medication that includes a combination of the opioid painkiller oxycodone and the over-the-counter drug acetaminophen. It is approved to treat and help manage moderate to severe pain. It is also susceptible to abuse and can cause an opioid use disorder, even in people taking it as directed. Addiction to Percocet occurs when misuse of this drug gets out of control when an individual tries but fails to stop using it and continues in spite of the major problems that it causes in other areas of his or her life, such as relationships, health, and finances.
Percocet Addiction Facts and Statistics
Percocet is a controlled substance because it comes with a high potential for abuse and addiction. It should never be used without a prescription and without the guidance of a physician.
- Percocet is listed as a schedule II controlled substance by the Drug Enforcement Administration.
- On average, 292 people die from an opioid overdose every day in the U.S.
- Misuse of opioids like Percocet costs $78.5 billion every year in healthcare costs, lost productivity, and criminal justice costs.
- Between 21 and 29 percent of people prescribed prescription opioids like Percocet will misuse them.
- Overdoses caused by natural and semisynthetic opioids, which include Percocet, have been increasing since 1999.
- Oxycodone, the main ingredient in Percocet, is one of the most common types of opioids involved in overdose fatalities
Effective Treatment for Percocet Addiction
Treatment of addiction to Percocet begins with supervised detox, but this is just the small first step. Detox must be followed up with effective, long-term treatments to avoid the likeliness of relapse. Residental treatment for Percocet addiction provides a safe environment in which to focus on and access a wide range of support services, from medical care to therapy and alternative treatments.
Medical treatment is an important part of the management of any opioid use disorder. Medications can be used for maintenance therapy, reducing cravings, and withdrawal symptoms. They are an important part of treatment but should also be used with therapy. Working with a therapist helps clients learn what led to their Percocet abuse, what their triggers are, and what they can to prevent relapse in the future. Behavioral therapies are particularly helpful in guiding patients to set and achieve goals, make healthy lifestyle changes, respond better to stress and Percocet-use triggers, and develop healthier relationships with loved ones.
Percocet rehab may also include a range of supplemental services that complement medical treatment and therapy. These include creative therapies with writing, art or music, recreation and adventure therapies, group support, relapse prevention strategies, family therapy, and lifestyle, nutrition, and exercise services.
Percocet addiction is a very serious illness that can result in a number of complications, including death from overdose. It is essential that anyone misusing this drug gets professional support to stop. Treatment for Percocet addiction is effective and the prognosis is good. Even those with severe addictions can learn to stop using and to live a healthy and productive life without substance use.
Signs and Symptoms Percocet Addiction
Someone who has become addicted to Percocet has lost control over the ability to stop using it. There are many signs of addiction, but the following are what mental health and addiction professionals use to diagnose patients. Just meeting two or three of these criteria indicate an individual has a mild opioid use disorder and could benefit from treatment:
- Taking Percocet in larger doses and for longer than intended
- Unsuccessful attempts to stop using Percocet
- Spending a lot of time using, recovering from, or acquiring the drug
- Experiencing strong cravings for Percocet or other opioids
- Neglecting responsibilities—at home, work, school, or other areas—because of drug use
- Continuing use of Percocet even though it causes relationship problems
- Giving up other activities to spend more time using or recovering from using drugs
- Using Percocet in dangerous situations more than once
- Using Percocet in spite of the fact that it causes or exacerbates physical or mental health problems
- Experiencing tolerance, a need to use more and more of the drug to get the desired effect
- Withdrawal symptoms when not using Percocet

Exact or single causes of any type of substance use disorder are impossible to determine. In most cases of addiction, including Percocet addiction, there is no single cause; there are instead multiple factors that contribute to the likelihood that a person will develop a substance use disorder, including:
- A history of substance misuse
- A family history of substance use disorder
- Undiagnosed or untreated mental illnesses
- Being at a younger age when misusing Percocet, a teenager or young adult
- A stressful, unstable, or traumatic home environment
- Spending time with other people who misuse substances, especially opioids
- Having access to opioids and Percocet
- An impulsive personality or history of risk-taking behaviors
Misuse and overdose on Percocet come with another important health risk. The acetaminophen in Percocet can cause serious liver damage. Combining Percocet with other medications that include acetaminophen, combining it with alcohol, and misusing it or taking enough to cause an overdose increases the risk of causing serious damage to the liver. Just 4,000 milligrams of this seemingly harmless drug can cause serious liver damage—one tablet of Percocet may have up to 650 milligrams of acetaminophen. Signs of liver damage are not always obvious until it has become severe, but they include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite. Liver damage can quickly lead to liver failure and even death.
None, or even all, of these risk factors together ensure that a person will misuse Percocet and develop an opioid use disorder. But, they do increase the risk, and anyone with risk factors should be aware of the potential in order to make better choices about substance misuse.
Knowing When It's Time for Percocet Addiction Treatment
Getting help for Percocet addiction is vital. But making that first step toward this important and potentially life-transforming move can be challenging for anyone who has tried to manage addiction on their own. Residential treatment for Percocet addiction is most effective because it allows an individual to focus on treatment for an extended period of time while learning the necessary skills for returning home and avoiding a relapse. Percocet rehab is tailored to each individual and typically includes:
- Detox
- One-on-one behavioral therapy
- Group therapy and peer support
- Educational programs
- Family therapy
- Experiential and holistic therapies
- Intensive workshops
- Fitness/recreation
- Relaxation strategies and stress management
- Learning how to avoid relapses
Relapse prevention is an important part of treatment and includes learning what triggers prescription drug use, how to avoid triggers, lifestyle changes, and learning and using healthy coping strategies.

How to Help a Loved One Get Treatment for Percocet Abuse
There are signs that you may see in a friend or loved one who has obtained a prescription for Percocet that cause you concern about addiction. Has your friend or family member started skipping school or work for no apparent reason? Do they complain of not feeling well? Do you notice an increase in their sleep requirements? Some people lose interest in personal appearance and show sudden behavioral changes. Do they always need money with no adequate or substantial reason? If you notice such changes, we can help you reach out to them and get the help needed. While you can have an influence on your loved one’s decision to seek treatment, an individual struggling with Percocet addiction must take ultimate responsibility for their own recovery. Your support and encouragement may be what will finally convince them to seek help for their struggles with Percocet.
Addiction is not a choice nor a sign of weakness. It is a condition of the brain that can respond to targeted treatment. When your loved one comes to Alta Mira, they will finally have a chance to be free from the debilitating effects of addiction.
- The Challenge. Helping a loved one who is struggling with Percocet can be a long and heartbreaking journey. It can be hard to help someone, particularly if they don’t want help or if they live far away. Many families wait years beyond the time that they first thought about intervening.
- Get Help for Yourself. If you have a loved one who is suffering from Percocet addiction, one of the first things you can do is take care of yourself by attending peer support meetings like Nar-Anon.
- Consider an Interventionist. The longer you wait for someone to “hit bottom,” the more their disease advances. You can actually increase the chance of a successful outcome by intervening with your loved one before their disease progresses to a more dangerous level. However, organizing your family to set limits and boundaries to get a loved one into rehab can be challenging.
Hiring a professional interventionist can help the family get organized as a team, prepare to speak to the addict in a coordinated way, to give your loved one the best possible chance of successfully arriving in treatment. Interventionists can also be helpful during and after the treatment experience, providing support and coaching to the family to ensure that the patient completes treatment. If you are considering an intervention, our admissions team can also help you with this process.

Percocet Addiction FAQs
Like other opioids, overdose is a very serious and life-threatening risk of misusing Percocet. Oxycodone is a central nervous system depressant, which means that it slows down brain activity, respiration, and heart rate. During an overdose, these processes can slow down to the point that breathing and heart rate cease, and this is fatal if not treated immediately.
Signs of a Percocet overdose include pale, clammy skin, inability to move, unresponsiveness, vomiting or gurgling noises, slow, shallow or stopped breathing, slow or stopped heart rate, and loss of consciousness. This can be reversed with an antidote drug, but it must be administered quickly. The risk of overdose increases when Percocet is combined with another opioid, alcohol, or benzodiazepine.
Substance use disorder ultimately leads to withdrawal when an individual tries to stop using the drug. In the case of Percocet, opioid withdrawal can cause very uncomfortable and painful symptoms that make it difficult to stop using:
- Anxiety
- Agitation
- Achy, painful muscles
- Insomnia
- Runny nose and increased tearing in eyes
- Sweating excessively
- Yawning
As withdrawal continues the symptoms can get worse, making relapse even more of a risk. Later symptoms of withdrawal include stomach cramps, diarrhea or vomiting, nausea, and chills. Withdrawal can begin as early as within 12 hours of the last use of Percocet and may last for several days.
The time it takes to go through withdrawal and to be ready for ongoing treatment is known as detox. It is essential that detox be done with supervision. The risks of going it alone include having a relapse and that relapse leading to a fatal overdose. Supervised detox can provide a safe environment and can provide medical management that makes the symptoms less severe.
